Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) Requirements

RPBio Form – ASAT

A Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) is an independent practitioner with a wide scope of practice including experimental design, interpretative analysis and interpretative reporting.

Education and Experience

Experience includes paid and voluntary activities. You must have 3 years’ experience in the last 10 years. Up to one year of experience may be pre-graduation.

An applicant who is already a registrant with the College (or an equivalent professional regulator in another jurisdiction) may claim all their applied biology experience gained while registered (pre- or post- graduation).

A thesis-based masters in an applied biology topic counts as 1 year of experience, and a PhD in an applied biology topic counts as 2 years of experience.

Biology courses must include a majority (>50%) of biological concepts, theory, or practice, from a range of disciplines such as geography, environmental science, forestry and forest sciences, ecological restoration, and environmental engineering.
Do you have 25 science courses of which at least 13 are in biology?
Science courses must include a majority (>50%) of scientific concepts, theory, or practice, and may include subject areas such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, geography, environmental science, forestry and forest sciences, ecological restoration, and engineering.

Biology courses must include a majority (>50%) of biological concepts, theory, or practice, from a range of disciplines such as geography, environmental science, forestry and forest sciences, ecological restoration, and environmental engineering.

Required Courses

RPBio applicants must have completed the following courses:

Communications: Have you completed a communications course? *
Examples include English composition, technical writing, scientific writing
Statistics: Have you completed a statistics course? *
Conservation or Resource Management: Have you completed a conservation or resource management course? *
Examples include Conservation Biology, Environmental Biology, Wildlife Management, Fisheries Management, Range Management, Natural Resource Policy, or Landscape Ecology
Ecology: Have you completed an ecology course? *
Examples include General Ecology, Population Ecology, Community and Ecosystem Ecology

Do you have a course in three of the following eight biology subject areas?*

  • Genetics (e.g. Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Genomics)
  • Cell Biology (e.g. Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology)
  • Systematics (e.g. Vascular/Non-vascular Plants, Ecosystem Classification, Invertebrate/Vertebrate Zoology)
  • Physiology (e.g. Cell, Plant or Animal Physiology)
  • Evolution (e.g. Evolution, Diversity and Evolution, Evolutionary Genetics)
  • Biochemistry (e.g. biochemistry, proteomics and metabolics)
  • Environmental or Earth Sciences (e.g. climate change, ecological restoration, soil science, hydrology, oceanography)
  • Geomatics or Bioinformatics (e.g. Bioinformatics, spacial analysis and geo-statistics, intro to geomatics, remote sensing)
