Education and Training

Communications: Do you have a communication course? ex. English composition, technical writing, scientific writing *

Applied Science: Do you have a course in Applied Science? ex. Wildlife Management, Fisheries Management, Applied Microbiology, Conservation Management/Biology, Landscape Ecology, Restoration Ecology, Environmental Toxicology *
Environmental Science: Do you have a course in Environmental Science? *
A total of 20 courses or higher that include the above courses

Work Experience

Work Experience Requirements

Two (2) years minimum of professional level work experience in applied biology within the last 5 years post diploma, degree or completion of course work with a maximum of 5 months of volunteer activities.

Registered Biology Technologists (RBtechs) are required to demonstrate work experience that has progressed beyond following prescriptions to exercising professional level judgement and discretion.

Professional Practice Competencies

RBTechs need to have at least one (1) example of a key indicator in each of the following seven (7) Professional Practice Competencies that you can explain in detail how you meet a key indicator through descriptions of your activities, knowledge, experience etc., and that can be verified by a reference.

Scientific Concepts and Knowledge: Be aware of and have experience with scientific concepts, knowledge and implementation. Key Indicators:

Laws, Regulations & Policies: The capability to interpret and understand the intent of legally binding requirements and policy. Key Indicators:

Standards and Practices: Understands the standards and practices and has the ability required to perform or practice applied biology. Key Indicators:

Project and/or Work Product Management: Experience in the discipline of planning, organizing or managing resources to bring about the successful completion of a specific project or work product. Key Indicators:

Records/Data Management and Informatics: Demonstrated ability to conduct the systematic control of creating, distributing, using, maintaining integrity, confidentiality, security and disposing of recorded information maintained as evidence of business activities and transactions. Key Indicators:

Professional Accountability: Performing the duties of one’s profession generally, or performing a particular professional task in a professional manner. Key Indicators:
I meet all requirements above
Communication: Respectfully and effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts and displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts. Key Indicators:

Referees (references)

The College requires 2 referees (references) preferably but not required to be applied biology practitioners such as Professional Biologists (RPBios, P.Biol), Registered Biology Technologists (RBTechs) or a combination of both, you have worked with who is knowledgeable of your professional work in applied biology.

Examples of Professional Work (work products)

An individual must submit a minimum of two (2) professional work products in applied biology, to the College to become a Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech). An individual can submit a maximum of three (4) professional work products to meet the College’s requirements.

Professional Work Products

If your data report has multiple authors and you are not the lead author, you will need to have your work/role in the report confirmed by the lead author or supervisor.

Data Report that demonstrates:

  • Methods of data collection
  • Presents data in a coherent and logical manner
  • Summarizes data in a coherent and logical manner

Examples:

  • Consultant reports, technical memos, technical reports that meet the criteria above.
