SUMMARY:Wetland Classification: An introduction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Columbia Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, this course will introduce students to the BC Classification system of wetlands and the Canadian Wetland Classification System\, providing them with an overview of how to classify and delineate wetlands and the differences between using these systems. The course will start with a classroom session learning how to classify wetlands using the physical and biological characteristics (e.g.\, hydric soils\, hydric plant indicators\, and hydrology). These field parameters will be applied to protocols including the Canadian National Wetland Inventory that can be used in the field to describe\, classify\, and delineate wetlands. The course will include 3-4 field site visits around the Revelstoke area to local wetlands to practice classification and delineation processes using site forms and the Wetlands of British Columbia (LMH 52) guidebook. Functional wetland assessments (including the Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol) and condition assessments will also be briefly discussed.

SUMMARY:Advanced Electrofishing – Online
DESCRIPTION:Backpack electrofishing is one of the most commonly used fish capture techniques in freshwater\, yet to be effective it must be done with strategy and care. The standard certification programs\, while necessary and essential\, focus on the safety aspects and how to conduct this form of fish sampling in a safe manner. Left out\, however\, are strategies and tactics to actually capture the wild fish in a stream. To assist practitioners in capturing more fish when doing this work\, NRTG’s Advanced Electrofishing MicroCourse provides students with lessons learned over decades on how to effectively capture fish using this tool.

SUMMARY:Field Soil Description & Classification Course
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Columbian Mountains Institute of Applied Ecology\, this course will cover procedures for observing\, measuring\, and describing soils in the field. The goal is to produce consistent data for soil inventory\, mapping and classification using techniques that improve the consistency of determining soil properties in the field. Students will gain experience with describing and classifying forest and wetland soils in the Revelstoke area using soil horizons and properties measured in the field. Students will discuss how soil data collected in the field can inform soil management practices relating to conservation\, agriculture\, forestry\, mining\, and oil & gas activities.

SUMMARY:Planning & Designing Fish Habitat Assessments – Online
DESCRIPTION:In this MicroCourse presented by NRTG\, participants will examine how to design fish habitat assessments based on the desired project objective. Are we doing a baseline survey in advance of a proposed development? A reconnaissance survey? Or perhaps designing a monitoring program that will measure potential habitat changes downstream from a mine or forestry project? Perhaps an assessment to identify limiting factors to fish production and from this design restoration activities? Each of these will require different approaches to the assessment to gather the important information on which to make decisions. Planning & Designing Fish Habitat Assessments will provide guidance on how to select the appropriate methods depending upon the purpose of the survey.

SUMMARY:Identification and Control Methods of Common Weeds in Western Canada – Online
DESCRIPTION:In this course delivered by NRTG\, presenters will cover the most common weed species found in Western Canada\, including their identification. Accurate identification is crucial\, as different control methods—ranging from chemical to mechanical—vary in effectiveness depending on the species. Some methods may even exacerbate the problem if applied incorrectly. Participants will examine each control method and its effectiveness for the common species.

SUMMARY:National Knowledge Assessment Virtual Scoping Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s National Knowledge Assessment process\, Canada in a Changing Climate: Advancing our Knowledge for Action\, is led by Natural Resources Canada with the goal of assessing\, synthesizing and sharing the latest knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation in Canada to help inform and advance decision making. The process involves broad and meaningful engagement with different sectors\, governments\, universities\, Indigenous groups\, and communities from across the country to develop authoritative reports that assess the latest knowledge on how and why Canada’s climate is changing; the impacts of these changes on our communities\, environment and economy; and how we are adapting. To wrap up the scoping activities that have been underway since May 2023 and ensure we hear from as many people as possible\, the Assessment Secretariat is hosting a virtual scoping workshop. The goal of this workshop is to gather ideas\, perspectives\, and feedback on the overall scope and approach for the next Assessment process (2023-2028) to help ensure that the final Assessment products best meet the needs of intended audiences\, while helping to advance adaptation in Canada. Delivered by Climate Risk Institute.

SUMMARY:New Perspectives on Mine Closure
DESCRIPTION:Mine closure is an issue of growing importance for mining companies\, the communities that host operations\, Indigenous peoples\, and governments with regulatory oversight of closure planning. In the coming years\, the world’s top miners are expected to spend over $50 billion (USD) closing mines and managing legacy sites. For many stakeholders and rightsholders\, there is a growing expectation that successful closure plans will go beyond remediation and short-term technical solutions to consider the complex socio-economic aspects of closure. Best practice planning is now expected to include measures that support a just transition for workers\, communities\, and governments as the jobs\, taxes\, royalties\, and philanthropic investments associated with producing mines diminish and then disappear. In this course presented by EGBC in Partnership with BRIMM Mining Education at UBC\, participants will examine the social and environmental dimensions of mine closure.
