This will be a great opportunity to network with the top herpetologists in BC and Canada who gather to share their research\, conservation initiatives\, and success stories. The last time the conference was held in BC was back in 2018 as locations rotate around Canada every year. It may be a few years before it comes out west again\, so take advantage! The CHS conference starts with a half-day conservation genetics workshop and informal meet and greet on Friday at the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea\, followed by two days of talks and their annual general meeting. There will be a banquet dinner on Saturday and the conference wraps up with field trips to various field sites on southern Vancouver Island on Monday. \nIf you have a conservation project\, natural history observations\, or research findings related to Canada’s reptiles or amphibians\, they’d welcome you to submit an abstract for a poster or platform presentation. Platform and poster sessions during the conference cover all aspects of amphibian and reptile conservation biology and herpetological research (e.g.\, population dynamics\, genetics\, diseases\, commercial harvest\, status assessment\, recovery plans\, monitoring\, habitat protection\, etc.). SUMMARY:New Perspectives on Mine Closure
DESCRIPTION:Mine closure is an issue of growing importance for mining companies\, the communities that host operations\, Indigenous peoples\, and governments with regulatory oversight of closure planning. In the coming years\, the world’s top miners are expected to spend over $50 billion (USD) closing mines and managing legacy sites. For many stakeholders and rightsholders\, there is a growing expectation that successful closure plans will go beyond remediation and short-term technical solutions to consider the complex socio-economic aspects of closure. Best practice planning is now expected to include measures that support a just transition for workers\, communities\, and governments as the jobs\, taxes\, royalties\, and philanthropic investments associated with producing mines diminish and then disappear. In this course presented by EGBC in Partnership with BRIMM Mining Education at UBC\, participants will examine the social and environmental dimensions of mine closure.
